We’ve spent close to two months in Mexico, starting in Mexico City and celebrating Día de Muertos, followed by a road trip across Yucatán.
Mexico City
Mexico City is a wonderful place – the city itself is huge, so we barely scratched the surface of the things you can explore here.
Our primary reason for getting here was to celebrate Día de Muertos, so let’s start with some photos from our experience:

Once the celebration was over, we spent a few more days in Mexico City and rambled around the city – we visited a museum, checked out the astonishing library, and made a trip outside the city centre to see one of the ruins:

We had a fantastic time here, and we’ve been pretty sure this would be just the start of an incredible journey across Mexico, but then came Yucatán.
Yucatán
We’ve done a road trip with three stops: Mérida, Tulum, and Cancún.
I’m sure there are lots of people who love all-inclusive hotels with big pools and an occasional step outside of the hotel zone, but that’s definitely not us.
Looking back, we would have been much better off spending more time in Mexico City and adding other cities like Oaxaca to the mix, rather than going where all the tourists go and wasting all their money.
It’s really disheartening seeing how the people living here take care of their ancestors’ heritage – souvenir shops right next to the pyramid, parking scams all over the place – it’s all made for a quick sale without even blinking an eye (don’t even get me started on the entrance fees for some of the most touristy places).
We clearly aren’t the right kind of people for these places – we like to explore, we want to dive into culture, we stay in local areas and not hotels.
We don’t take guided tours – we’ve been travelling for 12 months now, all across the globe – I think we are just fine handling things on our own, we don’t need your scams, your overbooked tours, and your overpriced souvenirs.
Anyway.. here are some photos from our trip:

If you are the usual all-inclusive hotel tourist, by all means, you will have a great time, just plan your finances accordingly.
If you are up for a bit of adventure, culture, and learning something about the country, stay in the bigger cities, rent a car, and do your thing – you will have a much better time.
That’s a wrap, folks.
We are about to take off for Milwaukee now, as we’re spending Christmas and New Year’s Eve with Mike and his family before heading to our final destination: New York City.
I wish you a wonderful Christmas!
The following post will most likely be published in January, once I have sorted all the photos taken from our short US trip – stay tuned!
